Mainframe Console Automation System

ODDS

The Operator Dynamic Dialogue System (ODDS) is an expert console automation system used to manage and monitor all primary Mainframe datacenter functions.

ODDS automates virtually all mainframe datacenter functions—including job scheduling, startup, shutdown and system performance monitoring.

By automating these essential functions, ODDS provides orders-of-magnitude greater speed and productivity compared to what can be done manually by operators.

As an example, an ODDS-automated initial program load (IPL) can be completed 95% faster than a manual IPL performed by an operator.

Features of ODDS

AutoRule Facility

Users can define “rules” through the AutoRule Facility or Interactive System Productivity Facility (ISPF) and store them as members of a partitioned dataset (PDS). Using ODDS built-in functions within rules, the user can define actions to be taken based upon some triggered event like a message being displayed or command issued. The AutoRule Facility allows datacenters to implement more than 90% of all console automation rules using preprogrammed functions.

ODDS/View

ODDS/View provides the ability on a z/OS platform to automate startup and/or shutdown of a network of started tasks under the control of a centralized monitor program. Key functions include viewing and controlling progress of the start up or shut down processes. The operator console or ISPF may be used to enter commands. Tasks may be selectively excluded and or terminated during start up or shut down processes. ODDS/View will also automatically restart tasks which had shut down unexpectedly or cycle a specified task.

Multiple Console Support

The ODDS Multiple Console Support Facility allows users to route Write to Operator (WTO) and Write to Operator with Reply (WTOR) messages from z OS-defined consoles to Time-Sharing Option (TSO) terminals. The facility can also be used to issue ODDS commands from TSO terminals. The Console Tutorial Facility allows operations personnel to document critical system and applications procedures for viewing from any operator console or TSO/E terminal.
